Darwin

On our way to Darwin we popped into see the jumping crocodiles, we boarded a boat with large clear windows and had window seats. As we travelled along the river the crocodiles would swim towards the boat for a feed. Each of the crocs within the feeding area had names and each one was fed at different times during the day. To see the crocs jump out of the water and grab hold of a piece of meat was impressive, they are such a big reptile averaging 4 to 5 metres sometimes 6 metres in length.

It was a very hot day in Darwin on the Sunday that we arrived, with no accommodation and air con, we drove to the water front and had some lunch followed by a meander through the city. Back to the van and onto the Mindil Markets and the Darwin Beer Can Regatta, busy busy busy. People were everywhere, the night was very sticky and humid, we had nowhere to stay due to a hiccup with our accommodation. We stayed at the market having a few drinks until late, then headed into the city to find a quiet street as camping in the foreshore precinct  is prohibited.

During our stay we visited the war museum, museum and a water park, all very entertaining.

Upon leaving Darwin and on our way to Litchfield for the week, we stopped at Berry Springs and swam in the warm bath like swimming holes, and had a relaxing doze in the sun.

We have had a little bit of down time in Darwin so there should be more to talk about over the coming week with many more spectacular sights to be explored.

Hope all are well, will chat again soon.

Alice Springs

Monday we went to the West MacDonnell Ranges, Standly Chasm was the standout. Before leaving for Wycliff Well, we visited the Alice Springs Desert Park.

Finally reached Wycliff Well that afternoon, the UFO capital of Australia. Caught up with a couple we camped with at Kings Canyon a week earlier and met a nice couple camping next door to us, four drinks later and almost burnt spaghetti.

Questioned the girls at the shop about what there is to do in regards to the UFO’s, their response was to walk around and look at the park’s murals, which were ok. Not much in regards to extraterrestrials. As for the park itself, one night too many, but part of the outback experience. They promote a bistro and train rides for the kids, indoor pool all this has been shut down and locked away. Weird, different, a bit apprehensive as to where tomorrow might lead, must try a free camp soon…

Ten minutes out of town are the Devil’s Marbles.

Alice Springs

It's Territory Day in the Northern Territory, fireworks can be bought today and let off tonight, although some started after lunch. Since about 5.30 they have been banging non stop. We grouped together at the bonfire in the caravan park where you are aloud to let your own fireworks off. There have been some big ones go off, could compete with the Australia Day ones. They have been spectacular with a couple of close misses, not near us but others in the area.

Marc decided to buy himself a didgeridoo and the sounds that we have been hearing are not quite the sounds that should be coming out of that instrument. Instead, it sounds like he's in a retirement home and the oldies are all letting off at the same time. The boys are attempting animal sounds with it, and are sounding quite good, to a degree.

Today we went to the East MacDonnell Ranges and completed a couple of walks, tomorrow we will go to the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Prior to this on Saturday we went to The School of the Air, which is a remarkable place, an insight to the way they teach is quite remarkable and looks quite enjoyable for the children. We also went to the Kenworth Museum, this was one for the boys, but I soldiered on and skipped a couple areas.

It's now 8.15pm and the fireworks are still going strong, when will the last one go off, here's for a good night sleep!
